Her Source | 30 Day Health & Wellness Challenge !

Happy Spring! Late? It’s never too late to get some spring cleaning done & here at Her Source we’re just getting started! This week, intern, Lauren, began a 30 Day Health & Wellness challenge which includes a vegan diet, daily exercise and meditation. The goal is to expand the mind, decrease stress & increase confidence. Starting small is understandable, whether that’s taking the stairs instead of the elevator or perhaps drinking more water throughout the week. We encourage you all to join in any way you can! Check out Lauren’s wellness journal entry below!
HealthArticle2pic1

To begin the challenge I (@lo4o4_) took a trip to Whole Foods which I was sure would cost a lot on my college budget. Surprisingly, my total was way less than I imagined. I purchased a lot of alternatives like almond milk, vegan meats (beyond meat, gardein),  vegan breads and lots of vegetables and fruit.

Two of the products I was most interested in trying were the almond milk and beyond meat. After tasting Almond Breeze’s original almond milk, I realized that I may actually prefer this one to the two percent cow milk that I am more accustomed to. Secondly, Beyond Meat is a product created by energist Ethan Brown who wanted a tasty answer to meat made from plants. At first glance, the beyond meat chicken strips resemble chicken almost completely. The taste is really close, kind of firm, however I doubt I will be purchasing more vegan meat. So far I’ve had better luck just sticking to eating raw fruit and vegetables , along with a lot of water!

Over the course of this 30 days I will explore veganism and physical/mental exercise. To read more about the #30DayVegan Challenge follow me at @lo4o4_ on twitter & @HerSource for daily tips & posts!  Let us know how you will be joining by mentioning @HerSource on twitter with the hashtag #30DaysVegan.  Goodluck!

Brooklyn’s “Yoga For Folks Of Color”

Yoga is popular for many reasons. It is an exercise that is both relaxing and has huge zen benefits. If you have ever been to a class, you may have noticed that there were only a few people of color. Of course every class is not the same, but it is well known that majority of the practitioners are white women.  yogatothepeople

An XOJane reader wrote in saying, “I thought about how even though yoga comes from thousands of years of south Asian tradition, it’s been shamelessly co-opted by Western culture as a sport for skinny, rich white women… I realized with horror that despite the all-inclusivity preached by the studio, despite the purported blindness to socioeconomic status, despite the sizeable population of regular Asian students, black students were few and far between. And in the large and constantly rotating roster of instructors, I could only ever remember two being black.”

However, Teacher Calia Marsha has decided to take a swing at the yoga world by beginning teaching classes in the Prospect Heights area of Brooklyn. Women of all races, cultures and sizes can come together Sunday’s for an hour and a half class for the price of $16.

Marshall writes, ”Yoga classes are really expensive and not accessible to working class or low income folks. I’ve been in this community for a long time; I don’t see myself reflected in the community very often.”

imageIt’s beginning to feel a lot like spring ! Right? Here at Her Source we embarked on a 30 day health and wellness challenge almost a month ago! This week, intern, Lauren, invites you in as she wraps up her trial vegan diet, daily exercise and meditation. The goal was to expand the mind, decrease stress & increase confidence.  She began by taking small steps and you can check out Lauren’s wellness journal entry below!

The #30DaysVegan challenge is coming to an end. Over these past three to four weeks I have learned a lot about myself and my body. For starters fake meat is not my thing. I also do not enjoy working out. On the bright side, I feel much better since beginning the challenge. I discovered ways my eating benefits the world and I’ve also found great vegan restaurants and vegan options at my favorite non vegan restaurants. The experience has been magical.

Over the last two weeks, I tried Terri’s, a vegan restaurant in the financial district THREE times. Yes, it was that good. Like I mentioned before, vegan meats have not been my best friend. However at Terri’s they find a way to make them wholesome, tasty and reminiscent of your meaty favorites. I have also become a huge fan of naked juices which I sometimes substitute for meals.

All in all the experience has been rewarding and I look forward to possibly making it a complete lifestyle. Follow me and twitter and instagram @lo4o4_ for daily tips !

Ways to stay shine-free this summer

facial cleanserThe heat is on and summer is under way which means for a lot of us, oily skin problems! For some, we find it hard to maintain healthy and shine-free skin during this type of weather. Here are some tips to use this summer to remain oil-free skin.

1. Switch from regular facial cleanser and begin using oil-free facial cleanser

If you have oily-skin, sometimes you wake up in the morning with a shiny, oily forehead. Immediately start your morning removing the oil from your face by using oil-regulating cleanser. A good cleanser to use is an oil-regulating cleanser that contains salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is good for skin because not only does it clear your pores but it also keeps oil from returning throughout the day.

2. Use toner

After washing your face with the oil-regulating cleanser, it is best to use toner, not astringent facial products. We say use toner instead because certain astringent products can leave your face extremely dry which will cause more oil to be produced on your face than normal.

3. Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate!

Make sure you are exfoliating and scrubbing your face weekly! When you scrub, you are washing away all of the dead skin that is on your face. This will also help the other oil-free products you are using more effective.

4. Mask Your Face

It is always a great idea to maybe once a week apply a facial clay-mask. This will help clear some of those pores as well as lowering the oil production on the face.

With these weekly steps, you should be able to maintain less oily skin for the summer. Some products that you can use this summer include:

  • Tea Tree Toner Cleansing
  • Aloe Calming Facial Cleanser
  • Suki Exfoliating Cleanser
  • Aesop Facial Cleanser

3. Health- It is always important to keep up with your health. Of course, we all want our bodies to look good and in order to maintain it, here are the three things to do: avoid junk food at all costs, exercise for one hour, and always go to the doctor.

4. Love- This is one tip that applies to both men and women. It is important to love yourself.

Knock out stress and insomnia with this quick and easy technique.  And no, it’s not just for the ladies!

As we all know, stress contributes to a number of negative side effects, especially for women.  From weight gain, and hair loss, to lack of sleep, being stressed can be extremely detrimental to the body.  As mothers, business women, full-time students, girlfriends and wives, there are a thousand different ‘to-do’ lists running through our heads.  We may not have found the cure for preventing stress, but with a few short steps, we can help you cope with the uneasy feelings stress brings on.

Dr. Andrew Weil has introduced a breathing trick that relieves anxiety and can knock that insomnia right out!  It’s called the “4-7-8 Technique” and is very similar to yoga breathing practices that can clear your mind, and help eliminate the 101 thoughts before bed.

Here are the quick and easy steps:

  1. Place the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth, and keep it there through the entire exercise.
  2. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound.
  3. Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four.
  4. Hold your breath for a count of seven.
  5. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound to a count of eight.
  6. This is one breath. Now inhale again and repeat three more times for a total of four cycles.

Don’t miss out on your full eight hours of sleep tonight; inhale relaxation, and exhale stress with the “4-7-8 Technique.”

With The Hot Months Approaching What Steps Can You Take

To Lose Weight And Stay In Shape?

Last week we caught up with up and coming Strength & Conditioning Coach Sharieff “Doctor Workout” Fisher, who is also a student at Queens College and the Assistant Director of the Hip-Hop 4 Better Health Program.  Throughout the years he has worked with many celebrities and will now be providing “WEEKLY TIPS” to help children, youth and young adults lose weight and stay in shape.  Here is what he has to say.

“Staying in shape at a young age has become a priority in my life and I want to share my wisdom and experience with all those that are looking for answers because they are having a hard time losing weight.  Today, about one in three US children and teens is overweight or obese, nearly triple the rate in 1963.  It is sad to say but childhood obesity is now the No. 1 health concern among parents in the US, topping drug abuse and smoking.  Childhood obesity is so severe in the US that in 2009, the government declared it a national epidemic.  Let’s look at the latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and others that I have researched to help you in your struggle to lose weight.”

Sharieff-Kid 1

Kid Ink and Sharieff.

From 2009-2012 there were 35.7% of Americans 20 to 74 years old who were diagnosed as obese.  That’s up from 31.1% a decade earlier and 13.3% in 1960-1962. The CDC considers adults obese when their body mass index, which takes into account weight and height, is 30 or higher.  We will show you at the end of this report how to find out about your “Body Mass”.

Obesity has hit some groups harder than others.  Non-Hispanic blacks have the highest age-adjusted rates of obesity (49.5%) compared with Mexican Americans (40.4%), all Hispanics (39.1%) and Non-Hispanic whites (34.3%).

Workout Benchpress

What’s the cause for being obese and/or overweight?

The causes of obesity include a variety of health and economic issues, but it is also important to note that family trends and environmental factors also play a role.  Minority women are responsible for the health of their children.  According to the CDC and Office of Minority Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services:

The fundamental cause of obesity and being overweight is an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended.  Globally, there has been: an increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in fat; and an increase in physical inactivity due to the increasingly sedentary nature of many forms of work, changing modes of transportation, and increasing urbanization.

Changes in dietary and physical activity patterns are often the result of environmental and societal changes associated with development and lack of supportive policies in sectors such as health, agriculture, transport, urban planning, environment, food processing, distribution, marketing and education.

How can you reduce being overweight and/or obese?

Overweight and obesity, as well as their related noncommunicable diseases, are largely preventable. Supportive environments and communities are fundamental in shaping people’s choices, making the healthier choice of foods and regular physical activity the easiest choice (accessible, available and affordable), and therefore preventing obesity.

Workout

At the individual level, people can:

  •  Limit energy intake from total fats and sugars;
  • Increase consumption of fruit and vegetables, as well as legumes, whole grains and nuts;
  • Engage in regular physical activity (60 minutes a day for children and 150 minutes per week for adults).

Individual responsibility can only have its full effect where people have access to a healthy lifestyle.  Therefore, at the societal level it is important to:

  • Support individuals in following the recommendations above through sustained political commitment and the collaboration of many public and private stakeholders;
  • Make regular physical activity and healthier dietary choices available, affordable and easily accessible to all – especially the poorest individuals.

The food industry can play a significant role in promoting healthy diets by:

  • Reducing the fat, sugar and salt content of processed foods;
  • Ensuring that healthy and nutritious choices are available and affordable to all consumers;
  • Practicing responsible marketing especially those aimed at children and teenagers;
  • Ensuring the availability of healthy food choices and supporting regular physical activity practice in the workplace.

In conclusion, obese children and teenagers face a slew of potential health problems as they get older, including an increased risk of diabetes, heart attacks, cancer, strokes, asthma, high blood pressure, liver and gallbladder disease, sleep apnea, respiratory problems, dyslipidemia, osteoarthritis, gynecological problems (abnormal menses and infertility) and depression.  As if that weren’t enough, obesity may harm young people’s long-term college and career prospects.

EatRight

I hope this knowledge has helped you in your personal “War on Obesity” and for you to better understand “Your Health is Your Wealth”, so stay tuned for the next report.  If you want information on how to measure your Body Mass, OPERATION D.E.E.P (Diet, Exercise, Education & Prevention), or some hot new tips on losing weight so you can look your best for the summer months contact me at: Instagram @Coralreaf; Twitter @XReaf.

Her Source | A Look Into Lupus: What Is It?

$
0
0

The chronic autoimmune disease affects mostly women of childbearing age, from 15-45.

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body. Lupus can attack the skin, organs and/or joints. It is considered a chronic disease because the symptoms usually last longer than six weeks; more times than not, the symptoms can last for years. In a body that isn’t affected by lupus, antibodies are created to protect the body from invaders such as the flu. In a body that has lupus, the autoimmune system cannot tell the difference between healthy tissues and the invaders, which creates a major problem with the immune system. The immune system creates autoantibodies in a person with lupus, which is what contributes to the pain, inflammation, and damage in various parts of the body; at times the autoantibodies attack and destroy healthy tissue in the body.

While anyone can get Lupus, 9 out of 10 adults with Lupus are women between the ages of 15-45. African American women are three times more likely to get lupus than Caucasian women.   It’s also common in Latina, Asian and Native American women.  Latina and African American women usually get lupus at a younger age with symptoms being more severe.

Women who have lupus have a higher chance of getting other health problems that are common in women. According to the lupus fact sheet on , there are certain diseases that can arise earlier in life:

  • Heart disease. When you have lupus you are at bigger risk of the main type of heart disease, called coronary artery disease (CAD). This is partly because people with lupus have more CAD risk factors, which may include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes. The inflammation that accompanies lupus also increases the risk of developing CAD. Women with lupus are often less active because of fatigue, joint problems, and/or muscle pain, and this also puts them at risk. Heart disease is the number one killer of all women. But, women with lupus are 50 times more likely to have chest pain or a heart attack than other women of the same age.
  • Osteoporosis (OSS-tee-oh-puh-ROH-suhss). Women with lupus have more bone loss and broken bones than other women. This might be because some medicines used to treat lupus cause bone loss. The disease itself can also cause bone loss. Also, pain and fatigue can keep women with lupus from exercising. Staying active is important for keeping bones healthy and strong.
  • Kidney disease. Many symptoms of lupus come from the swelling of organs in the body. Almost half of all people with lupus develop kidney problems, called lupus nephritis. Kidney problems often begin within the first five years after lupus symptoms start to appear. This is one of the more serious complications of lupus, but there are treatments if problems are caught early. However, it is important to know that kidney inflammation is not painful and you can’t feel it. That is why it’s important for people with lupus to keep up-to-date with the screenings their doctors recommend. These will include urine and blood tests.

Some things you should know about lupus:

Lupus is not contagious, meaning that it is not a disease that is passed from person to person.  Your lifestyle, health and environment can trigger symptoms if you are prone to getting the autoimmune disease. Signs of lupus are different in each person depending on how their system reacts. When lupus is flared up symptoms are worse and the person most likely will have body aches and feel ill. When the disease is dormant the person feels better and back to normal.

Some of the common signs are:

* A butterfly mask across the nose and cheeks; you may look very rosy
* Having a fever without a known reason
* Being very tired
* Joint stiffness and pain, it may or may not be accompanied with swelling
* Achy muscles and weakness
* Skin rashes
* Anemia
* Kidney problems
* Weight loss or weight gain that is unusual
* Loss of hair

If you believe you or a loved one may have lupus, start a journal/log of your symptoms. You may be able to see when and what is triggering the flare ups.  Contact your physician for an appointment.  Be sure to have your medical history, along with any family history of lupus or other autoimmune diseases. During your appointment, your doctor will most likely give you a physical, and schedule you to have blood and or urine tests, and a possible biopsy.

If it is found that you do have lupus, be reassured that you can live with lupus, and continue a healthy, happy life. Relax and take your days with ease. Don’t take on to much so you won’t become to tired and overwhelmed. Keep stress to a minimum and get support from family, friends, and support groups.

Please note this information is not intended for diagnosis or as a substitute for seeing a physician.

Light Bodys Health Movement with India (EyeOccupy)

We sat down with model and artist India at The Light Body Movement

It was a tense New York City evening in June. Voices of scattered priorities, fumbled conversations of after work politics, basketball predictions, and more filled the hectic city streets. However, despite the hustle and bustle, there was one place of tranquility that could ease the mind. Located near Times Square at 13 W 38th St.,The Light Body’s Health Movement – a pop up event fusing two art expressions: painting and yoga, celebrated an enterprising model’s life and vision.
m
Passed the glass doors of Bene Rialto and up two flights of stairs came music from DJ Quiana Parks; DJ, cancer survivor, and creator of DJ For A Cure, an organization bringing together the art of DJ’ing in order to raise proceeds for finding a cure for cancer patients- a portion of the nights proceeds would be donated. Two more flights of stairs, and the artist herself awaited her honorary guests.
b
India is an interesting person. She is a model, an artist, and the epitome of the New York City dream – a child with big ideas journeying to unfamiliar territory; reinventing herself in the process while never losing her childlike curiosity. India – the culmination of Grace Jones and Betsey Johnson – knows exactly what she wants. Minutes before show time, she conducts a symphony of art curators, headed by Mini People, New York City socialite and former manager of MMG’s, Stalley. Her stylist, Farruchii, hangs behind in Prada ensuring her outfit remains intact.
c
India, painting under the moniker, Eyeoccupy, created a series reflecting her personality: bright, bold, and straight forward. Using different mediums, such as: oil, crayons, magazine pictures, and graphic design, made the climate of the room feel fresh, innovative, and clean, just like the sponsors of the event: Boxed Water and Reebok.

At 8:30, the crowd was instructed onto the second floor where music by Quiana Parks was now replaced by Celeste and Newesha, two Yoga instructors part of the collective PopUpYogaNYC. After an introduction, the room was instructed to sit on the ground where, surprisingly, the room deflated down to the ground like a tumbling avalanche of energy. The room was instructed to close their eyes and so they did; when it was over, the room was hazy, and light; beautiful and serene; dizzy but conscious; just like the overall night.

All in all Light Bodies was organized, well received, and inviting. It was a transcending experience in a health driven environment, using the arts and yoga to tell one woman’s story.
1) The Source: Where are you from? At what age did you come to NYC?
India: I was born upstate. Lived in my grandparent’s farm for a bit then moved to the DMV. I’ve been in NYC for a while now, since I was 19.
2) The Source: How did you get into the modeling industry?
India: The modeling industry… came to me. When my mom would push me to model… I rejected it… many people… would tell me the same thing, so I left basketball and started to walk runway and take pictures. Then I started getting paid for it.
3) The Source: How does modeling and the art world correlate, and how do they differ?
Fashion and art go hand in hand. Fashion is art. Art is fashion. They live together. They are best friends. But fashion is that friend that sometimes gets on your nerves and talks too much.
4) The Source:  How did you come to choose Bene Rialto as the location for your event?
India: Bene Rialto is a community of up and coming artists and they always have open arms to talent. I am very thankful for the space.
5) The Source: You mentioned you sometimes can be a prophet – what is one prophecy you saw come true?
India: Well, often I dream about the end times… things just getting out of control in this world. One reason why I’m vegan and meditate is to stay conscious. Often I just see manipulation through media and brain washing through food and water… simple pleasures turning ordeal. I want to be the change, I want to see in the world… facts.
6) The Source: As a model, is art a source of letting others see your soul opposed to just aesthetic?
India: Yes. Often I am judged or misrepresented because of my looks. But I’m not only a hanger, I am a light body. A model without chains or limitations. I want the world to see my soul, but it’s cool that I have a face people can get comfortable with to let me in… the real organic me.
7) The Source: Your outfit for the night was pretty legendary, who were your designers?
 My outfit  was from a wonderful designer from Paris (@letsgetflash) … Styled by the amazing Farruchii (@eatwatyoukill)
8) The Source: What I got from Light Body’s was – this was a world you created as a reflection of your lifestyle – how much of this is so – whats a day in the life of India like?
My life can be pretty hectic. My days are never the same, except keeping the goal the same: get higher… and higher and higher – and not on drugs, but on life. With all the hustle and bustle in NYC, one must mediate and I do so through yoga (vinyasa/ hot yoga) and self reflection. Without this, I would be very unfocused and uncentered.
9) The Source: How has art actualized the India we see today?
Art is recording my life. Press play!
10) The Source: In your down time, how do you pass time?
I love to play with my kitten. Yoga of course. Friends and food is fav. Traveling. Loving. Helping others. Did I say eating already?
11) The Source: What did you learn about yourself when completing this series of art pieces? How much time do you dedicate to your art work?
I’ve learned that you should expect the unexpected. At first I was going to gear my art more towards the wellness and yogi aspect, drawing gurus in praying stance and lotus flowers, but I wanted to also capture what you need meditation from and depict a darker center as well. Light is nothing without darkness. Not saying my pieces are dark, but they aren’t landscapes.
12) The Source: What’s a piece of advice you would give others wanting to enter this sphere?
Confidence is key. Do you boo! *flicks wrist*
13) The Source: What were the names of those involved with meditation/yoga practice?
India: PopUpYogaNYC, Newesha (@rockinyogi), Celeste (@thenaughtyyogini)
14) The Source: What can we expect in the future? What are your future goals?
India: Dropping more t shirts on the website… European/British tour this August with graffiti and pop up shop… Also SXSW this Feb. Keep watch!

‘Oatmeal and Water’ – 1/2 cup of oatmeal and 1 cup of water. Combine into a jar or any bottle with a top laying around at home. May be put in fridge, but better if left out. Prep this before bedtime. In the morning all the oatmeal should be at the bottom and water on top. Before having breakfast every morning first thing you want to do is simply just take your jar or bottle of oatmeal and water and DRINK JUST THE WATER. It’s that simple!

‘Warm to Medium Hot Water’ - Daily before eating breakfast take 30 minutes prior to boil 1 cup of water. Once that’s done pour into a mug along with 1/2 a lemon squeezed. Sip this slowly and feel the warm lemon water do good to the inside of your body. Thank me later when it gets your bowel movements going!

Last, but not least ‘8 glasses of water’ a day or more. Super annoying, but so worth it! You want to incorporate at least a minimum of 30 minutes of ‘exercise’ daily or at least 5 times a week. Consistent ‘green tea’ throughout the week is such a plus! Once or twice a day is perfect because too much gets rid of too many things your body may actually need. Also, if you don’t like green tea try YOGI Tea. It comes in several flavors along with great benefits. Find out more information on their website: www.yogiproducts.com

Progression is Kerry Washington’s middle name and it shows in her newest cover!

The actress flexes her incredible physique on this cover of “Self” magazine. In nothing more than a sports bra and leotard the Scandal star defines what the “snapback” should really look like. Although, Washington was flawless before giving birth to her 1-year-old daughter Isabell, she claims that she’s not aiming for the pre-baby body. Kerry Washington has wowed in a new fitness and health spread for Self Magazine revealing how motherhood and her hectic set life as Olivia Pope, has set pushed to the next level.

“A few weeks ago, my manager asked: ‘Do you feel like you’re back? I feel like you’re back.’ She meant it as a total compliment, but we had this great conversation where I was like, ‘You know what? I try really hard not to use that language, because it’s not about going backward in life,’” Kerry explains.

“I’ve been really focused on not being ‘back’ to anything, but being the best version of myself right now,” she adds. “My body is the site of a miracle now. I don’t want to be pre-miracle.”

You’d assume with a schedule like Kerry’s it’d be hard to stay dedicated to the gym. The actress explains that pilates is her thing, which she’s been doing two to six times a week for the past five years. She’s also a certified yoga instructor, and shares that her and her fellow Scandal actresses take regular hikes around Los Angeles as a group ritual. Washington tributes her dedication to her role on the ABC hit series Scandal

“It makes my heart smile to think that maybe part of the reason I’m taking all this on is because of Olivia,” she says. “She truly believes that she can handle every situation, and I do feel that has bled into my life. I have more of a sense of my capacity to do anything.”

Well, sounds like Kerry Washington is a real life Gladiator to say the least.
